Flu Prevention Checklist
Get an annual flu shot. Your family members need the shot too!
Wash your hands frequently. Twenty seconds of hand washing with warm water and soap removes bacteria and viruses. Wash before and after eating, after going to the bathroom, after coughing and sneezing and after touching surfaces which may have been contaminated by other people.
Don’t touch your eyes, nose or mouth.. if you’re in a public place where you may come into contact with the flu virus. Remember that germs can easily infiltrate your system when you rub your face.
Cover up when you cough or sneeze. Use a tissue or raise your arm up to your face to cough or sneeze into your sleeve. Dispose of the tissue as soon as possible and wash your hands immediately.
Avoid unnecessary close contact. A person can spread flu germs for a whole day before exhibiting symptoms, and up to five days after that. Stay clear of those with flu-like symptoms.
Keep all shared surface areas clean. Doorknobs, light switches, telephones, keyboards and other common surfaces can become contaminated with bacteria and viruses. Regular cleaning and disinfecting of these surfaces can help.
If you get sick, stay home. If you go out when you are sick you will spread your illness to anyone who comes in contact with you — co-workers, classmates and neighbours. It will take you longer to get better unless you are well rested. Wait for your fever to disappear and your cough to subside before returning to work.
